The French Round was full of drama at Magny-Cours across the four classes racing at the iconic venue
The MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship resumed after its August break, bursting back into action at the historic Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours. Four categories were on track as title races heated up and the track action was fierce. We’ve gathered the best moments from the weekend in one handy play for you to watch…
FRIDAY’S TRACK ACTION: WorldSBK riders refine their machines as pole is decided in WorldSSP, WorldSSP300 and WorldWCR
It was a relatively calm Friday in France as the WorldSBK grid completed race simulations and refined their respective machines throughout the two practice sessions, with highlights available here. For the other three classes, Friday afternoon was about setting the Race 1 grid as the drama ramped up, and there’s highlights from each class available: WorldSSP, WorldSSP300 and WorldWCR.
THE RACING BEGINS: Razgatlioglu victorious in WorldSBK as WorldSSP300 has thrilling last lap
Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) claimed the first of his three French Round victories in Race 1, putting him on nine wins at Magny-Cours. However, all eyes were on WorldSSP300, as Loris Veneman (MTM Kawasaki) made a sensational return to the Championship and claimed a hard-fought victory in his first race back. There was also action in WorldSSP, when it looked like Stefano Manzi (Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing) had made a costly mistake at Turn 13 on the penultimate lap. He lost a second to Can Oncu (Yamaha BLU CRU Evan Bros Team), but he recovered that time for an epic last-lap battle.
SUNDAY’S BATTLES: a five-rider scrap in WorldWCR, Manzi pulls off another unlikely comeback
Razgatlioglu doubled up on Sunday, becoming the first rider to have 10 or more wins at Magny-Cours, surpassing the previous record of nine held by Jonathan Rea (Pata Maxus Yamaha). He now has 10 or more wins at three different venues, the only rider to achieve this. In Race 2, there was an epic podium scrap between Rea, Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team) and Alex Lowes (bimota by Kawasaki Racing Team) as the trio went head-to-head in the first half of the race. Before WorldSBK Race 2, however, WorldWCR well and truly kicked off: a five-rider fight all the way to the line as Beatriz Neila (Ampito Crescent Yamaha) claimed victory ahead of Chloe Jones (GR Motosport), Lucie Boudesseul (GMT94-YAMAHA) and teammates Maria Herrera (Klint Forward Racing Team) and Roberta Ponziani. WorldSSP also delivered an epic final lap again, as Manzi defied the odds for the second time in as many races.
NEXT UP: a trip to MotorLand Aragon
The Tissot Aragon Round is up next, with WorldSBK, WorldSSP and WorldSSP300 in action at a crucial time of the season. Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing - Ducati) will aim to cut the gap to his rival in Spain and stop the #1’s momentum. In WorldSSP, Manzi could wrap up the title in Race 2 if results go his way in Race 1; he needs to leave the Spanish venue 100 or 101 points clear of Oncu, depending on results. WorldSSP300’s title race is an unpredictable affair with five riders separated by just 25 points with 150 available.
